los angeles is literally on fire, and has been for a week now in what they’re saying is one of the worst natural disasters in us history. it’s absolutely devastating. we all know someone who’s lost their home +/or business in the eaton and palisades wildfires.
i love la — i was born here and moved here in hopes of staying for the long haul. thanks to those who have checked in — it means the world. right now, we’re safe in echo park, but so many friends and neighborhoods aren’t.
people love to hate on la, but the way the community has come together is really something special. restaurants are always some of the first to show up for the community — paying out of pocket to donate their time, food + bev and space to those in need.
where to support:
resources:
sifting through where to donate and where to volunteer is a bit overwhelming but here’s good up to date reputable resources
the angel’s emily and bitesized’s kate have compiled an up to date list of resources, donation links, volunteer opps
5pm lucky’s list of direct fundraising for los angeles area fire victims and gofundme's with less than 20% of their goal reached
brock & lori (+ my friend lindsay) have been updating resources for those who have lost their home here

overwhelmed by all the spreadsheets and lists? your money’s in good hands by donating directly to lafd + the pasadena humane society
lafd - support the firefighters
pasadena humane society - displaced + injured animals
hospitality industry showing up:
if you are able to, please continue to support your favorite restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. they’re all hurting and a lot of them are spending their own funds, feeding those in need right now. dine in(side), take out, order merch, donate to their venmos / gofundmes etc.
we lost some real gems: reel inn in malibu (my parents used to take me as a kid <3), side pie and amara kitchen in altadena, among so many more — eater has a running list here
cafe tropical has been going above and beyond partnering with feed the streets to make 600+ burritos a day to front line workers — venmo or volunteer to support

chef balo and world city kitchen have been making 700 meals a day — venmo or volunteer to support

la’s hospitality + food / bev places that are either directly giving back by volunteering their food, space + time, collecting donations, giving proceeds, providing meals to first responders, displaced victims, and volunteers (in no particular order + updating as we go):
