where to — vancouver:
just spent a long weekend in vancouver for b’s documentary’s film festival. it is quintessential fall in vancouver right now: bright leaves scattered about and crisp air in stark comparison to la’s on and off again heatwave. i was in vancouver for the first time with friends back in 2016 and remember it having that pnw twin peaks feel with the best chinese food, and it seems i remembered right (we ate noodles literally every meal). there’s also a hot debate if the california roll was invented in california or vancouver (?!) so had to order one while there just in case. here’s where to go in vancouver:
there’s a few cool pockets of vancouver: kitsilano, mount pleasant, chinatown + richmond so use their version of citi bikes mobi bikes, and bike throughout the green city stopping at nemesis coffee + oidé coffee for caffeine, jade dynasty, fat mao noodles, richmond night market + bao bei for fuel, and pizza coming soon, pretend wine bar, la fabrique st-george winery + bar tartare to wet the whistle. paid subscribers, scroll to the bottom for your full vancouver guide.
just upped my at home espresso game:
i was just gifted an ascaso uno espresso machine (promo code daniellegadams for a discount at espresso parts) and it’s safe to say i have a crush on an appliance. tracking the ups shipping link felt like tracking santa’s sleigh. i’ve always loved coffee + cafe culture and crave an oat cappuccino daily so hoping this helps curb my spending and teaches me a barista skill or two. thank you to the many youtube tutorials and my coffee friends (masha at counter culture coffee, serom and jessie + matt), who also have an ascaso and have answered my many basic questions. i clearly have yet to master the foam art, but come on over for a shot of espresso and i’ll be accepting nice medium roast whole beans to grind up (using my fellow opus) for any / all occasions. + use promo code daniellegadams for a discount at espresso parts.
la happenings + openings:
sam’s place - highland park’s latest natural wine bar’s hiding in plain sight with no website or instagram account. come for the wine + housemade dry roasted almonds, stay for the wood panel walls, lowkey feel, and the japanese sweet potato over tahini. i know i’ll be back soon + often
silverlake lounge by well wishes - new owners took over (similar to cafe tropical next door) and it’s already proving to be a fun little scene (even has a cafe tropical espresso martini!), pouring jumbo time wines, with live music + djs
luv2eat express - luv2eat thai’s next door sister in hollywood with grab and go thai street food combo meals. if you see the kabocha egg dish, get it and thank me later
good friend coffee - justttt officially opened in virgil village + fits quite nicely into the neighborhood already with dayglow beans + a minimal cool interior
flowers finest - flowerhead tea’s colorful tea room in eagle rock just opened and has me wanting tea for the first time ever
good neighbor bar - finally a good cocktail bar just opened in altadena by the silverlake wine fam (+ client!) — don’t sleep on the popcorn to go along with your (classic or tiki!) cocktails
canyon coffee canned cold brew - cute on the go cold brew cans available at canyon or their usual retailers (la grocery & cafe, honey hi, little nelly, etc.)
serviette world’s bathing culture - pop-up happening oct 24-27 in silverlake. go for me please as i’ll be in austin eating tacos
barr seco daytime - just when i thought i couldn’t like seco more, their daytime cafe is in full swing with dayglow coffee, lunch bites and pastries by out of thin air (who’s also having a well deserved moment right now)
